We welcome all people and well-behaved dogs to escape the hustle and bustle, relax and unwind in this beautiful part of the world. Come and discover our tranquil setting with spectacular views across the valley, stunning sunsets and amazing night skies.
'Coed Y Gaer Fawr' which translates to 'the trees of the great fort' has lots of country charm with its mature woods and old stone buildings, including the main farmhouse (the owner’s private residence), Y Beudy (our 2-bed cottage), and Penrhyllan (our 1-bed cottage), all date back to the 1700s. The cottages benefit from their own garden with seating, and access to 15 acres of private ground, in a quiet secluded location, with safe ample parking and stunning views. Both cottages are self-contained and have the advantage of the owner, Collette May living on-site in the farmhouse with her children and dogs should you need anything during your stay.
As guests, you are invited to enjoy our private fields and woods at your leisure during your stay. You are more than welcome to wander 15 acres of private grounds, at your leisure. The grounds feature a mix of woodland, grassland and cover crops (depending on the season) and are often used for gundog training with mown strips for retrieving, height-adjustable log jumps into the woods and a fixed jumping pen in the field. There is also a pond in the main field for water work. The grounds consist of 15 acres of fields, two ponds including one for dogs to swim in and a fenced-off wildlife pond, plus two woods. One wood is a lovely open bluebell wood with mature oak and beech trees. The other wood is more dense and therefore a perfect home for a variety of different wildlife.
Hills and mountains surround the farm making it an idyllic rural retreat. The views are very special at Mid Wales Holidays and we have incorporated numerous seating spots all around the grounds for our visitors to be able to take it all in. The countryside location and surrounding scenery are beautiful whether you visit in the spring when the wood is full of bluebells, in summer when the buttercups are out, in the autumn when there is stunning array of tree colours, or in the winter when the surrounding mountains have been dusted in snow. The accommodation has central heating and provides a cosy place to unwind in the winter, with the outdoor areas being the perfect place to enjoy a barbeque and glass of wine in the summer. Overall the place leaves you feeling very relaxed, calm and restored. Getting back in touch with nature is very good for the soul.
Collette is a mum of three and the proud owner-founder of Mid Wales Holidays and Completely Gundogs. Her home is shared with Labrador Retrievers Angus, Grace, Harry and Fern, plus cheeky Chihuahua-cross Rosie.
Over the last decade, Collette has dedicated her life to learning about science-based, reward-based gundog training in order to teach her students to train their dogs in a fun, force free and effective way.
Before starting her first dog training, walking and sitting business, Lead & Listen in Surrey, she completed extensive theoretical and practical training with world-class trainers, including Chirag Patel.
Collette has a particular interest in how we can communicate more effectively with our dogs by reading their body language and also by being more aware of our own. Understanding our canine friends is the secret to increased cooperation and general obedience.
Passionate about gundog breeds, Collette regularly takes her own dogs picking up throughout the season and is an accredited Gundog Club instructor and assessor.
An avid competitor too, taking part in gundog working tests and field trials, Collette has achieved numerous awards in working tests and is proud to have reached these high standards using positive reinforcement methods of training.
She believes that training should always be fun and enjoyable for both the dog and handler, regardless of the end goal. Collette finds it rewarding to help owners train their dogs, to improve their relationship and reduce problems both at home and out in the field, whether working or competing.
